Ark Group will host the 16th annual Knowledge Management in the Legal Profession conference as a live streamed event on October 19-20. Here’s a look at speakers, sessions, and hot topics on this year’s agenda.

Daily keynote presentations

Day one of the conference will open with a keynote address on the rise of the legal professional in the age of digital transformation by Mark A. Cohen, founder & CEO, Legal Mosaic, LLC. Cohen will discuss what going digital looks like for the legal profession, the importance of legal service delivery post-COVID-19, and skillsets and opportunities for advancement in the legal industry.

The second day of the live event will feature a keynote presentation on KPIs: the harder the better from John Alber, futurist, International Legal Technology Association & Institute for the Future of Law Practice. Alber will explore the barriers to fundamentals of business, the importance of transparency in business management, and how to uncover opportunities within your business.

In-depth case studies

Meredith Williams-Range, chief knowledge officer, and Glenn LaForce, global director of knowledge & research, from Sherman & Sterling will present a case study Monday morning on the new normal of KM (during COVID-19 and beyond). Williams-Range and LaForce will discuss how the global pandemic has impacted the pace of change and increased demand for innovation during remote working times, share practical examples of both client facing and internal projects that support the current crisis, and provide tips to move forward to a post-COVID-19 world.

A case study presentation about how a dynamic KM infrastructure will help future-proof a firm, even in the event of a pandemic will immediately follow. Scott D. Rechtschaffen, chief knowledge officer, shareholder, Littler Mendelson P.C., will share a close look at the firsthand experience Littler workplace experienced from COVID-19 and the magnitude of the employment law challenges COVID-19 presented for its clients. Rechtschaffen will discuss how Littler’s established knowledge management team and technology infrastructure made it possible to quickly assemble and deploy the necessary resources to pivot quickly to meet client needs.

Robust panel discussions

The two-day conference will feature an impressive line-up of panel discussions with industry experts:

  • Getting your house in order: firm intelligence will be moderated by Joshua Fireman, founder/president, Fireman & Company. Fireman will lead a discussion among panelists as they illustrate both how and why KM professionals have an opportunity to position themselves as leaders in the firm intelligence and master data management space.
  • Rechtschaffen will return alongside Peter Krakaur, managing director, Ernst & Young, EY Law, for the panel discussion, unshackling KM: supporting legal service delivery or your business model? Rechtschaffen and Krakaur will share the various stakeholders involved in legal service delivery to consider if KM strategies can and should be unshackled from discrete business models.
  • A discussion on the digitalization of law firms in Latin America and Southeast Asia will be led by Patrick V. DiDomenico, chief innovation officer, Jackson Lewis P.C., to explore how the pandemic helped accelerate the digitalization of law firms in other parts of the world. Panelists will examine tech adoption by the judiciary in Latin America and Southeast Asia, how to incorporate legal operations under a KM umbrella, jurisdictions that seek to trailblaze a new form of legal KM, and the importance of a broader interpretation and approach to legal KM.
